Target Heart Rate Zone is vital for cardiovascular improvement

Since graduating from Appalachian State University in 1990 with a degree in Exercise Science I am often asked why is knowing your heart rate so important.  Your rate is directly proportional to your intensity level.  Low intensity means low heart rate and high intensity means high heart rate.  If your goal is to improve aerobic efficiency or to lose body fat it is VITAL to know what your heart rate is.  Technology has advanced so much that it is extremely easy to monitor your heart rate.  The easiest way is to wear a heart rate monitor like the one pictured.  It tells you exactly what your heart rate is, how long you were in your target zone, how many calories you burned and so much more.  For a meager investment of $50 you will be well prepared to improve your fitness level.

Your Target Heart Rate Zone, which is calculated using the Karvonen Formula tells us what your heart rate needs to be for maximum benefit.  As Exercise Physiologists we can help you determine that in just a few minutes.  We are here to help you-just ask!  If you need help purchasing a monitor we can help you as well.

Have a great weekend and get out and MOVE!

Life is too short-laugh a little!

Owning a business can be a rather stressful adventure.  When you think you have things in control you get that dreaded phone call or email that sends your heart rate and blood pressure to abnormally high levels.  You think you were in the Tour de France climbing a mountain for 5 miles at a 8% grade!  But what helps me survive those tough times is laughter.  Life is too short to constantly worry.  If you think you have that perpetual grey cloud over your head, think again.  There are far more people in worse condition then you are.

Heres a good joke to get you through the day:  Two cows are standing in a field.  One cow turns to the other and asks, "Are you worried about getting this mad cow disease that rotting our brains?"  The other cow replies, "Why should I be worried?  I'm a squirrel."

Speaking of heart rate, I will be touching on the importance of monitoring yours when exercising in my next post.

We all have temptations

Temptation:  according to Wikipedia, "A temptation is an act that looks appealing to an individual. It is usually used to describe acts with negative connotations and as such, tends to lead a person to regret such actions, for various reasons: legal, social, psychological (including feeling guilt), health, economic, etc."

As you can see this little guy can't resist his temptations to sit on the birdhouse.  Like so many of us it is difficult to stay on track, say "No" to the TV or bowl of ice cream, but in reality it is.  How many times have you watched TV or had a bowl of ice cream?  I will bet that it won't be any different than the last time.  When I am confronted by temptation that's exactly what I do.  I think about the last time I had the sweet or sat on my gluteus maximus (remember that word?) and then I say NO!  I dont need it.  Lets do something different.

I challenge you just like I did with Sylvestor in the picture to just say NO!

Need help? I am here to help.  Look for an early entry this week on Target Heart Rate Zone.  What is it and why is it important.

I LOVE this time of year!  The colors are magnificent and the weather is cool and sunny.  I have been working 7 years on my yard and I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  My yard is a corner lot and its huge.  It was a blank canvas in the beginning and now its is close to a work of art.

Working in my yard is my stress buster.  Having a stress buster in your life is vital both physically and mentally.  I was talking to one of my clients today about what is really important when trying to get started.  The best thing to do first is reduce your stress.  When you are able to do this you are much more inclined to get started on your path towards optimal health.  When we are stressed we can't think clearly and we usually don't care about anything.  Its so self-defeating.  Find something that gets your mind in a better place so that you can make the right choices.  If you are not sure what too do I am here to help.  Heck I will even let you help me in my yard!

BTW, this is a Crimson Queen Jap. Maple.  Stunning!!!!
